I Tried 'Medical Medium' and Here's What Happened
When you have a chronic illness and your symptoms keep you from living your life and feeling your best, you're willing to try anything.
With little sleep night after night; migraines multiple times per month; chronically swollen glands; more fatigue than a "healthy" 30-year-old woman should have; chronic bloating and poor bowel movements; chemical sensitivities that knocked me out; and the debilitating, miserable vertigo spells. . .
I was fearful of what my health (and my life) would look like in 10 years.
Paleo and keto are what is trendy right now. And more and more physicians and health professionals also believe this is the way many of us should eat.
In my experience, this couldn't be farther from the truth.
I gave the Paleo thing an entire decade of my life and I wasn't any better. I was lean, but my health hit all-time lows. Alternative doctors helped, but all my crap persisted.
Enter Anthony William, The Medical Medium and his first book Medical Medium: Secrets to Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal.
I read it in February '17 and I was so captivated that I took immediate action.
Here's What I Did After Reading Medical Medium
I swapped out eggs for fruit and a smoothie in the morning.
I removed the meat from my salad at lunch. (The book advises to cut back on animal protein, but I felt better eliminating it all the way, so have no fear if you're a meat lover).
My snacks changed from nuts, fruit, and bars to fruit and raw veggies.
My dinner went from meat and non-starchy veggies to steamed potatoes, all kinds of veggies and I placed more emphasis on a variety of herbs.
I swapped coffee for herbal tea.
I swapped chocolate, well for nothing because once I was eating more fruit, I no longer craved chocolate. I no longer had sweet cravings at all after dinner.
This is due to the fact that I feed my body with plenty of glucose during the day. Often, we avoid fruit fearing the glucose, and the result is having cravings for sweets.
Coming from the paleo world, I was already not eating gluten, grains, dairy, corn, soy, canola oil (and I never could digest pork). So, I didn't have much further to go.
Giving up so much of one's favorite foods can seem like an impossible task. Let me tell you this. . . If your will to get better and will to heal is stronger than your desire for corn, cheese, eggs, bread, or soy products you can do it.
Coffee and chocolate were my vices that I thought nothing or no one in the world could ever convince me to give up.
I thought wrong. Because with the knowledge that I had gained about these foods from Anthony William, not only did I make the choice to give them up, but I did it without regret.
After reading this book in just a few days, I was voracious for even more information. I bought his only other book at the time Life Changing Foods: Save Yourself and the Ones You Love with the Hidden Healing Powers of Fruits and Vegetables (this was before Thyroid Healing came out).
I listened to his radio shows (podcasts).
I joined the support groups on Facebook.
I scoured his blog for more "ah-ha" moments and more truths.
U2's song "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" no longer applied because I had found what I was looking for! On a soul level.
It took me 2 months to get into the habit of eating more fruit, more raw foods, more greens, and eliminating coffee and chocolate.
We are most successful when we take the time to compassionately make changes to our food habits.
I also added certain supplements he recommends for certain things to speed up my healing. (Of course, you should only do this under the supervision of a caring, open-minded physician, especially to get the individual dosages).
So where am I today, a year and a half later, in my attempt to heal chronic illness?
I only have disturbed sleep maybe twice a month, and when I do, I'm not awake as long as I used to be.
My chemical sensitivity reactions are 50% less severe.
I can count on one hand how many migraines I've had since I began this journey and they have been a fraction of what they used to be. And most go away with a little energy work.
The fatigue happens here and there- but I no longer have neurological fatigue, what I used to call "deep fatigue."
As for the adrenal fatigue, my energy is more regular throughout the day (no longer tired in the morning and energized towards the evening). The fatigue I do get is more so when I'm detoxing a bit too much.
I have no more cravings for sweets! Or that need for coffee at 1 or 2 pm.
I look forward to the lemon water, celery juice, and heavy metal detox smoothie every morning.
Mostly, I don't feel deprived! I know it sounds strange, but I feel like there is so much abundance in what I have available for me to eat.
I can't go into detail about the specifics of why I eliminated certain foods in this post because it's waaay too much for one post.
I will add one thing. There are some people that say they "tried it" and it didn't work. These dabblers didn't fully commit. They either didn't it give up all the foods that feed illness, commit to daily celery juice, or they didn't give it enough time. Although many see some improvements right away, it may take as long as a solid 2 years of committing to these protocols to see drastic results.
After everything I've done for my health in the last 15 years, nothing has given me better results than following these protocols.
