Can we speak candidly for a moment here?

I'd like to talk about bowel movements, a not-so-elegant topic.

We all poop... well... except some of us have a little trouble in this department and don't poop enough.

Do you only go once a day or every other day? Do you go daaays without a bowel movement?

I feel for you! The bloating, the feeling of wanting to go but can't, or other constipation symptoms that make us deal with the agony of trying to figure out what to eat or what to take to get it moving. I've been there, too.

I'll begin with my own journey on the porcelain throne. My bowel troubles worsened when I was 19. I started spending more time trying to go and this was accompanied by lots of bloating and discomfort. I was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) with constipation. IBS can also be accompanied by "too much bowel activity" and some IBS sufferers experience both.

After going vegetarian for a few years, it got better.

Then I ate the Paleo way for about 9 years. I went every day, BUT it would only be 1 or 2 times... which is not enough, Y'all!

Back to the present time- the past 15 or 16 months of not eating ANY animal products and completely WHOLE-FOODS, PLANT-BASED (no processed, junk, or alcohol)- I am proud to say I go more and spend less time doing it. 

Now I go 3-4 times per day which is IDEAL and a sign of a healthy bowel!! (Probably more than you wanted to know but I'm an open book, what can I say.)

It's remarkable to me and it feels amazing. It makes me want to dance around all of the time!

So, what did I do to improve my constipation?

Only 4 little things and only one is not food related.

1. I went whole-foods plant-based and got rid of meat and eggs. Since I was already Paleo and wasn't eating grains or dairy, meat and eggs were the next to go. 

2. Added LOADS of fruits and vegetables- especially raw. Smoothies replaced eggs in the mornings. My lunch salads with chicken became raw greens, veggies, and a little fruit. Steamed potatoes became the accompaniment to the veggies at dinner instead of meat.

3. Added more hydration. I started juicing at least once a day. I added more water in the form of lemon water and aloe water (with fresh aloe leaf only). All of the raw fruits and veggies I mentioned above are VERY hydrating. Herbal tea such as nettle, dandelion, and lemon balm replaced coffee. I reserved cooked foods for dinner time and opted mostly for steaming vs baking or sauteeing to increase the hydration power. Cooked food can be dehydrating. 

4. I bought a Squatty Potty. Have you lost your ability to sit in a squat? This is also the position we should be pooping in! However, modern american toilets don't allow for this. A squatty potty gets you closer to this natural position by raising your legs to free up your colon so things move more smoothly. Or, you could go completely au naturel and sit in a squat on your toilet! Why not. 

Wanting to heal my gut has been a priority for me. This podcast from Anthony William is where I got my inspiration. There certainly isn't a lack of information about gut health these days, but Anthony William's completely rises above all of the noise. 

Some of you may be thinking, "Okay, here's another vegan talking about the downside of meat. I don't want to hear it!"

I hear you. And I'm not completely against meat. I respect that many people feel they need it.

But, I don't want you to feel the sorrow that this person feels.

"Here I sit, broken hearted, paid a dime and only farted."

Growing up, my Dad would say this to us kids! We had issues, I suppose! 


I'm not blaming meat. There ARE other factors involved here. The three biggest causes of constipation are Inflammation preventing peristaltic action, dehydration, and not enough fiber.

You don't need to give meat up forever or even completely. Just try decreasing it, add more raw fruits and veggies, and cut out the junk food and pre-packaged food. Try juicing celery for the ultimate gut tonic. Cucumber juice is also super hydrating and anti-inflammatory.

The more you can improve what goes into your mouth, the more you'll improve the manner in which comes out!
